History

The first Darkstalkers comic was released in English by Viz in 1998. They translated the Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge manga by Run Ishida as a six part mini-series. In 2000, the series was republished into a graphic novel.

In 2003, Dreamwave Productions announced a multi-license deal with Capcom to produce comics based on several games, including Darkstalkers. Unfortunately, Dreamwave filed for Bankruptcy on January 4th, 2005 and a Darkstalkers comic was never published by them.

In the spring of 2004, UDON announced they had picked up the licenses Darkstalkers and Rival Schools from Dreamwave’s fallout. UDON released the Summer Capcom Special which featured the origin of Morrigan. The special was sold at various comic conventions throughout the summer. In November, the first issue of Darkstalkers came out with much anticipation. A Darkstalkers story was also printed in Devil’s Due Publishing’s Free Comic Book Day Flipbook with G.I. Joe. The Darkstalkers series ran for six isuues and was re-printed into a graphic novel before going on hiatus. UDON chief Erick Ko promises Darkstalkers will return in 2006.
